Caravan & Motorhome Sun Canopies
The quickest awning type to erect
What Is a Sun Canopy?
A sun canopy is the simplest form of awning. It attaches to your caravan or motorhome's awning rail and extends outward to create an open-fronted covered area - providing shade from the sun and shelter from light rain. Most canopies have no side panels (though some can be added as optional extras), so they do not create an enclosed room like a full or porch awning.
Sun canopies are the lightest, cheapest, and fastest to erect of all awning types. If all you need is somewhere to sit in the shade with a drink, a canopy does the job without the bulk, weight, or cost of a full awning.
Why Choose a Sun Canopy?
The lightest, simplest, and most affordable option
- The quickest awning type to erect - most take under 10 minutes
- Lightweight and compact when packed for transport
- The most affordable way to add covered outdoor space
- Works with caravans and motorhomes alike
- Ideal for summer touring when you mainly need shade
- No complex frame assembly - steel or aluminium poles, or air tubes
When Is a Sun Canopy Enough?
A sun canopy is a good choice if you:
- Tour mainly in summer and want shade rather than enclosed shelter
- Do not want to carry the extra weight of a full or porch awning
- Want the fastest possible setup
- Are on a tighter budget - canopies start from around £120
- Use a motorhome and want something minimal for day stops
If you need enclosed shelter from wind and rain, or you want a secure space for belongings, a porch awning is the next step up.
Steel vs Aluminium Poles
Budget canopies (like the Camptech Sussex, from £121) use steel poles. These are heavier but sturdy and cheap to replace. Premium canopies use aluminium poles, which are lighter and resist corrosion better - worth the extra if you are carrying the canopy regularly.
The Camptech Hasting Air (from £269) uses air tubes instead of poles, removing the weight and setup time of a traditional frame entirely. At the top end, Dorema's Diamond Sun Canopy (from £749) and Onyx Sun Canopy (from £679) use high-quality aluminium frames with Dorema's certified build quality.
